23 May 2011

Moods been good the last week, and feeling more positive! Was at work on Thursday and Friday to help out, did take the opportunity to wander in a bit later and leave a bit earlier. I love 5 hour work days. You can get heaps done, but don't have to motivate yourself to get going when facing those 8 long hours stretching in front of you. Instead it's more like, only 5 hours available - have to get stuff DONE!

James was going to disappear off to Thailand again on Saturday, but the trip got moved (Yipee!). So we had a fairly calm weekend on the whole. In fact, we managed to not do any washing. So instead of starting the week with a clean slate, we'll have to put a bit of work in this evening.

Did finally get my Skype and webcam set up and sorted, so I can hopefully soon communicate a bit more regularly with far off friends and family.

Masters
Not much progress on masters, mainly because I switched to trying to get stuff done for this conference that's looming. Talked stuff over with James and checked stuff with my supervisor this morning, and I'm fairly confident that I'll be able to produce a decent presentation before the end of the week.

My supervisor also offered me the chance to discuss potential chapters, and possible due dates this Friday which I eagerly accepted. Much of my writing issues stem from not having a clear aim in view. I simply find it easier to write when I've got a structure set, and a bit of due date pressure won't go amiss either.

My boss reminded me today that I had said last year the masters would be finished by the end of July. While pointing out that when I said that I didn't know that I was going to be moving house, my brain did none the less muse on the possibilities of having the majority finished by then. Technically, it is possible to have it written by then - just without all the references and nitty gritty. My sensible side tells me not to reach for the stars when I haven't been able to get to the moon, but my ego is prodding. Will have to think on it.

Project Hot Stuff
Weight's been fairly constant.

Got the links to the websites that Ania told me about. It's called Couch to 5K and it's a running program that aims to build you up from scratch to running 5 km over the course of 9 weeks. In addition, there's a guy who made pod casts for it which contain music and tell you when to run and when to walk. Sounds like a good use for my iPod Nano.

Wargaming
Glued my drop pod together although it still needs a bit of painting. Glued on the arms of my dreadnought. Did the shoulder pads of 6 blood claws. Fished out 5 Black Templar assault marines and converted them to Space Wolves! The paint job isn't as neat as I'd like since I didn't bother stripping them first, but they look pretty good. They're suppose to be a really wild bunch so I had fun jazzing them up.

Cats

Both cats are looking fine, fluffy and cute in their winter coats. Zorn has taken to perching on us as often as possible in impossibly cute poses, so I'm assuming she's feeling the chill. The other evening Zwerch decided to entertain us by running through his entire repertoire of "dead cat" poses while snoozing on the floor. It's simply impossible to take a splayed out cat seriously.

Getting going

And autumn is definitely here seeing as I have to wade through leaves to get to the car.

Been looking at ways to work on my self-discipline and have been trying to get up at 6 every morning (in the cold, in the dark...). Needless to say, it hasn't always worked, especially since nice warm James is back, but I did find that I was getting up much earlier than I have of late. I've pin pointed the main problem as not having something set to do as soon as I get up. Trying to decide how to handle that. Exercise would be good, but comes across as very daunting that early. Masters work will simply set me nodding again.

Masters
I've been doing a lot of reading and contemplating, but not really getting stuff written. Managed to get myself so completely caught up in the "What is cultural history?" question that I ended up confusing myself. Have since retreated and gone back to "I think this is history" and "Why I think it's history" line that I've always preferred from Carr's What is history? Face it, in my opinion it's not very practical to try and separate history into all it's nuances. Technically I'm doing large amounts of cultural, economic, and social history, with some technology history.

However, THIS week I want to get something written!

Project Hot Stuff
Been good, been bad. Lost some, gained some. Did drop to an all time low, but picked a bit up again. Aim this week: get below a certain number and stay there for more than a day. Maybe I should bum that list of what to eat and not eat off Dina.

Wargaming
I now have 20 blood claws assembled and mostly painted. The drop pod is slowly making head way, and I have ten termies half assembled and a-waiting paint. Though I'm going to start painting them so long, I need to put in an order for 4mm x 1.5mm disk magnets. I've decided to splurge the extra and give them interchangeable weapons since the Space Wolf terminators are suppose to all be highly unique. Magnets make them easier to customise, while keeping them flexible.

In addition I've put together and painted the old metal dreadnought that was lying around, and also started on my rune priest. Been trying to get things to a certain degree of "finished" so that I'm ready when I receive the two battleforce kits I ordered!

Cats
Zorn's been rather mew-y of late, constantly complaining unhappily about something or other. She does seem happy to have James home again - curls up in the cutest positions on his lap. Zwerch varies between being supper cuddly, and a typical boy cat (doesn't let you touch him, ignores you). Men.
